Sekinan Library 1986-2018

Sekinan Library is a research site on language founded at Tokyo in 1986, where I started language study mainly related with Chinese classical philology called "Small Study", that is the most fundamental study base of Chinese characters analysis using Chinese philosophical classics. After the deepening down this classical study, since about millennium days, I again started the mathematical study of youth's dream, aiming to research language universals inherited from Linguistic Circle of Prague in 1920s' results, being assisted by algebraic geometry as a incapable student affected by glorious Bourbaki's mathematics. Sekinan Library greeted the 30th anniversary in 2016.

I frequently talked with CHINO Eiichi at the coffee shop near the station we used to get on. The shop was at the second floor and the steps upstairs always sounded squeaking. Under the dim light the topics of conversation was on language or linguistics after all. He was already the university professor but I was a poor research student. But he was always showed me the general tenderness.
The subject he gave me were impressive and useful for me, in which the most important is the history of The Linguistic Circle of Prague and the excellent pioneers of language study. He had of course the unique approach to the study but I had never any conspicuous one except boundless interest on the study.
In his wide and precious telling for me I gradually determined my course to proceed. It was the making of basic and radical foundation on natural language by searching the structure of language through simple and clear description. For keeping this difficult aim I had a decision that there was only way to use mathematics that I had abandoned at the past for its hardness.
In my age 20s, I had read Ludwig Wittgenstein and Nicolas Bourbaki in concentrating. I did not clearly understand  Wittgenstein's approach. But I borrowed his writing style that was simple and clear. So my early work's descriptions were nearly at him. But I decided that I never adopted strongly-intuitive thinking.
I always considered mathematical basis or analogy. My aim was the independence from the intuitive description. Keeping on this course, there was seen the mathematical basis that I must adopt the model in which language universals are clearly described. I entered to the mathematical description of study that was confirmed premises of my way.

言語の普遍性

―一度だけそのチャンスがあった。法則を発見したとおもった。言語における出現の頻度についてだ。それから二三日は調べまくった 。 すでにその法則は見つけられていたけどね。 Ｃはそう言ってことばを止めた。年上だが彼はＡに、年齢差や経験差を考慮することなく、彼の有する言語についての知見を可能な 限り教えてくれた。言語にあるのは事実と法則、それが彼のすべてだった。Ｃはみずからそのいずれをも発見できなかったと明言して いた。Ａにはそのとき返すことばがなく、ただだまって受け止めるだけだった。 この法則のことはその後もずっと気になっていたが、あるとき蔵本由起を読んで、ほぼ明瞭になった。Ｃが言っていたのは、アメリ カの言語学者、ジョージ・ジップによって発見された経験則かそれに関連するものだったとおもわれる。 蔵本に従えば、ジップの法則とは、文学作品などに現われる単語の出現頻度の順位は逆ベキ法則に従うというものだった。例示され た時田恵一郎と入江治行の図によれば、シェークスピア、ダーウィン、ミルトン、ウェルズ、キャロルという異なる分野の著作におい て、見事な類似が示されていた。特にウェルズの「タイムマシーン」とキャロルの「不思議な国のアリス」ではほとんどまったく重複 するカーブとなっていて、同一の作品ではないかとおもわれるくらいだった。 二十世紀前半に発見されたこの卓越した経験則を、時田と入江はサンプルとなった著作に出現する単語において１から 100000 まで の頻度とランクを解析しグラフ化することで、まちがいなく不動の科学的な法則であることを追認した。 　すなわち著者がその思考を表現するために自由に選択したとおもわれるすべての単語が、この法則によればどの著者においても、ど の単語を何回用いるかという相関関係においてはほぼ同一になることが、現代科学の数量的成果として美しいまでに示された。 　むかし K から詩とは何かと尋ねられたとき、A は、素朴なレベルで、詩とはそれまでの言語の規範から逸脱しようとすることだろう かと答えたが、今は文学全体が、人間が作ったであろう言語の強い法則に逆に支配されていることを本能的に知って、ながい果敢な闘 いを挑んできたようにも感じられた。 　ガリレイではないが、それでも異なる人間の著作が、これからもジップの法則に従って、常に同一に近いカーブとなり続けるだろう こともまた事実だ。Ｃはしかし、A のこうした言語に対する過度な観念化を好まず、その生涯をかけて言語の 事実とそこから抽出される法則を追い、そ れらを見出さなかった。そして或るとき突然の病いで逝った。言語学を愛した幾冊かの本を残して。最後の本の名は、 「言語学への開 かれた扉、Janua Linguisticae Reserata」。彼が言うように、扉は万人に開かれていた。ひたすら追うのであれば。 Ｃが生きていれば、今またＡに問うかもしれない。おまえは今何をしているかと。そしてＡもまた同じように答えるだろう。事実で はなく普遍を追っています、こりることなくと。 生きていれば、あの急な階段をのぼって、天井の低いテーブルでまた話していただろうか、Ｃよ。転注をめぐる研究の国境を超えた つながりの中で、再発見された転注論の貴重な原稿を損傷させないために、発見者みずからが飛行機に乗って届けてくれたことなどを。 だから途方にくれるようにまずしかった私はどれほど勇気づけられたか、Ｃよ。駅前の路地を入ってすぐ左の、掘っ立て小屋のよう だったあの店の名まえはカリフォルニア。ぼくらの決して悲惨ではなかった忘却の紀念に、今はそれを書き記そう。

対称性。それはかつてＣと繰り返し話した内容だ。１９２０年代のプラハ。雑誌TCLPに載ったカルツェフスキイの論文、「言語記号の非対称的二重性」。言語が保持し続けるところの、それによって言語が言語であり続けるところの、絶対的に矛盾する柔構造と硬構造の共存。言語において二重に内在し続けるだろう永遠の矛盾。言語がかくも柔軟でかくも堅固でいられるのはなぜか、そのほとんど絶対的に矛盾するかともおもわれる二重性をカルツェフスキイは提示した。Ｃがその最後の本の中でただ一人天才と称した言語学者、セルゲイ・カルツェフスキイが残した白眉の論考。
なぜこの共存が可能なのか、この二重性に対する整合的な理解は今もなお、たぶん提出されていない。これに比して世界の量子化quantizationについては着実な進展があった。
深谷によれば、コンツェヴィッチは１９９７年の論文で形式性予想を提示し、２００３年の論文に至って、みずからその予想を証明した。「ポアッソン多様体の変形量子化」。深谷は彼の本の中でその証明の概略をｎＲの場合に限って述べている。証明の全容は計り知れない。量子による空間、それももう夢ではないかもしれない。

岡潔の本をあこがれを持って読み続けたときがあった。発見のよろこび、記述するよろこび、かけがえのない友情。中谷治宇二郎の 存在。湯布院での会話。サイレンの丘越えて行く別れかな。中谷が岡に送った最後の句。 Ｉに話してからあと、Ａはひたすら勉強した。書きたい想念が次から次へと沸いてきた。それをパソコンに打ち込み、自分の Web ページに送った。そうすれば手元になにも残さなくていい。手元に置いたものは、これまでそうだったようにやがて散逸する。今度だ けは彼は存続を望んだ。みずからの記述の跡を記録しておきたいとおもった。 　夜もひたすら書き、休日もひたすら書いた。組ひも理論の大槻知忠は tex 上で考えると言ったが、そんな感じだった。 考えるための資料が手元にはほとんどないので、休日になると図書館へ行った。彼の住まいから駅とは反対方向へ進み、右折してゆ るやかな坂を上るとそのちょうど丘頂に当たる部分に図書館があった。門を入ると、ひろびろとした芝生の前庭があり、人々はそれぞ れのくつろいだ姿で休み、語らっていた。のどかで心休まる空間だった。建物は三階建てで片仮名のロの字形をしていて、真ん中は中 庭になっていた。中庭にはベンチと芝生があり、そこにも人々が適宜憩っていた。 Ａは三階の北面の数学のコーナーに行き、そこで必要な本を読んで過ごした。住民なので借りることもできたが、それは最小限にし て、閲覧するだけにした。家では思考と記述に専念した。いい図書館でＡにとって必要な本はほとんどそろっていた。関連しそうなと ころをくりかえし読んでメモをとった。わからない部分はそのままにして先へ進んだ。 或るとき、俣野博を読んでいたらその最後の方で、水や空気がミクロで見れば離散的であるように、将来は時間や空間もミクロでは 連続体でないことが明らかになるかもしれないと書かれていた。 流動する版画の時間も、離散的であるかもしれない。究極では、時間そのものも量子となるのか。 世界がもし離散的であるなら、言語のモデルとして球を考えるのは、王道だ。しかしもはや球にこだわることもない。ゆがんだ図形 でも、張り合わせた継ぎはぎの図形でもいい。モデルは、整合的であれば自由にとれる。カントールはほんとうにいいことを言った、 数学は自由だ、と。 疲れたときは雑誌を拾い読みした。或る日、最新号の後ろにあるバックナンバーを見ていたら、西島和彦の文があった。西島・ゲル マンの法則で知られる彼の死が報じられたのはしばらく前ではなかったか。時間があっという間に過ぎて行く。ひとつの時代が終わる 、それならばこの文はほとんど彼の遺作に近いのか。 西島は言う、ディラックはシュレディンガー方程式に多数の時間変数を入れて自由な電磁場を導き、朝永はさらに電子場に自由を与 えて、そこに空間内に独立する時間変数を入れて座標系に依存しない方程式を導き、超多時間理論を築いた、と。西島はさらに進めて ディラックによれば、未来の超曲面Ｃ２のベクトルが現在と未来の二つの超曲面Ｃ１とＣ２とに依存し、そこに働く関数がＣ１からＣ２ までを積分することで与えられる、と記していた。 すなわち或る状態を閉ざされた時間で積分すると、未来のひとつの時間が確定し表記される。これは、漢字の図形に対して、内在す る閉ざされた時間を設定すると、ひとつの意味が確定することと近似する。ディラックの理論は言語へと延伸できる。言語は物理で表 記できる。Ｉに話したことそのものではないか。 Ａは去年の春に行った新しい美術館でのモディリアニ展のことをおもいだす。 　そのすこし前、館内の椅子のことが新聞に載ったことがあって、二人の話題になった。 ―新しい美術館には高価な椅子が置かれているらしいね。 　ライナーの「山嶺」の店の窓に、早春の木立が見えていた。 ―どんな椅子なの？ ―わからないけど、そこにすわると、自然にやさしいおもいになるとか。 ―そうなの？ ―そんなふうになるといいかな。 彼はなかばそんなふうにねがっていた。 ―でもほんとうにそうなるといいわね。 もう少しで暖かい春が来る、そんな一日だった。 モディリアニ展には、Ｓ駅で落ち合い、都市線からはすこし離れていたので地下鉄で行った。彼は地下鉄が好きだった。 ―なんだかこわいくらいね。 　Ｓ駅でエレベータがゆっくりと深く降りて行くと、Ｉはあまり乗りたくなさそうな顔をした。Ｉにはそんなところがあった。 　地上に出ると春の光がまぶしかった。 展示はすばらしいものだった。 　今おもえば、モディリアニという存在は、普遍的な言語を表記するひとつの予感だったのか。彼の画を見ていると、深い安堵に満た された。岡が言っていた発見がもたらす全身的な深いよろこびに似たものが、たぶんモディリアニを見るＡの中にも生まれていた。

I have thought on language through the rich results of the linguistic Circle of Prague and its important member Sergej Karcevskij. But now my recent thinking has inclined towards algebraic or arithmetic geometrical method and description. Probably it is the time of half farewell to those milestones which led me to the standing place here with rather sufficient results in my ability. Great thanks to all that always encouraged me for hard and vague target on language especially meaning and its surroundings. And also to CHINO Eiichi with love and respect who taught me all the bases of language study.For recent results see the following papers group named AGL Arithmetic Geometry Language and related essays.

1. Ideogram
Ideogram has long history.
The history of ideogram continues from Egyptian hieroglyph to Chinese character and now adds LATEX Symbol List*6-1.
The 21st century will necessarily become the century of ideogram.
The reasons are below.

1. Ideogram can contain rich information in small space. 
2. Ideogram can show information at a glance.
3. Ideogram can sustain information stably in long time*1-7.
4. ​Ideogram has fertile capability to superb diversity of languages*8-5. 

2. Set theory
Probably in summer 1977, I was  designing for a paper on the sentence in language. The central part of the paper was connection between words or sentence, in which the logic of  language would be shown using the set theory as a simplified model of true and false. I was strongly influenced from Kurt Godel, Gaishi Takeuchi and Bourbaki*1-1. But this design was abandoned for my lack of mathematical basis keeping on.

3. Qing dynasty's linguistics
In 1980s and 1990s I was lost in learning Chinese classical character theory, Xiaoxue, especially Qing dynasty for ideogram's fundamental property*2-1. At this period I did not write any paper on language. I solely read WANG Guowei*1-2, WANG Yinzhi, DUAN Yucai and Qing dynasty's linguists.

4. Time property in characters
In Autumn 2002 I got pneumonia and was hospitalized about 2 weeks, where I thought of 1970s' dream, writing clear description on language universals by mathematics. The theme was as hard as ever. So, at the bed I thought the basis of language from the side of Chinese character’s classical approach which had vast heritage till Qing dynasty. I directed my attention to the character's figure which had compound meanings containing time elements continuing from Yin dynasty's hieroglyphic characters left on bones and tortoise carapaces some 2400 years ago. I thought that Chinese characters had containing time and its structure could be written by geometric approach once I had abandoned for difficulty. After leaving hospital, I wrote a paper titled On Time Property Inherent in Characters*3-1.  

5. Quantum elements 
In 2003 staying at Hakuba, Nagano, I wrote a rial paper on language universals from the viewpoint of physics. This was remained manuscript till now. The title was Manuscript of Quantum Theory for Language*3-2 for the time being. Because in summer 2003 I wrote the first paper on language universals from physics titles as Quantum Theory for Language*3-3 which was read at a conference held in winter  2003 of Nara Japan.

6. Finite generative
Language probably begins from finite elements and generates.*3-6, 3-7 its world responding to outer world. I learned the concept of finite generative from von Neumann Algebra*4-1 at around 2006 and 2007. 


7. Structure and dimension
Language probably has structure, which details are unknown now for me. But several phenomena hints me the existence of structure containing dimension. Its example is shown at the Crete's lie, on which I wrote a tiny paper titled as True-false problem of the Crete*3-8 in 2013.

8. Immanent time
Chinese character has immanent time in figure *3-1, 3-4. On the theme I wrote several papers between 2003 and 2005. Main papers related with the theme are seen in  Early Paper and Early Paper 2*5-1, 5-2.
For the immanent time, I wrote a mathematical paper titles as Word as Infinite Loop Space*3-9.
In comparison with Chinese character, hieroglyph is very fantastic object on ideogram. But even for learning its basis I have not enough time now. At time to time I have seen the relative events on hieroglyph.  The exhibition held at Mori Arts Gallery in 2012, Tokyo titled as The British Museum ANCIENT EGYPTIAN BOOK OF THE DEAD JOURNEY THROUGH THE  AFTERLIFE *8-2 was very fantastic, in which The Greenfield Papyrus was overwhelming.

9. Disposition, distance, flow and boundary
​For thinking of language, I have been interested in four elements, disposition, distance flow and boundary*3-10,11,12, 13,  which seem to become the basis of language.
especially at researching ideogram, disposition is fundamental to construct grammar.

10. Energy, dimension and distance
For more further research language , now I suppose at least three elements being  based from mathematical description, which are energy, dimension and distance*3-14.
